THE EFFECTS OF POOR WASTES DISPOSAL ON THE STREAM WATER QUALITY IN AGBANI URBAN AREA IN NKANU WEST LGA OF ENUGU STATE

Project topic for Biology department

Abstract

This work focused on the effects of poor wastes disposal on the stream water quality in Agbani Urban area in Nkanuwest Local Government Area of Enugu State. The objectives were to: 1 To Identify and describe the stream water resources in the study area, 2 Examine the composition of solid wastes and their disposal methods, 3 Assess the effects of wastes dump on the stream water quality, 4 Examine the health implications of the observed trend in above and to suggest affective managements strategies for managing solid wastes in the study area. Laboratory analysis of chemical quality of stream water samples from five different samples locations were carried out. The parameters analysed were: pH, DO, TDS, TSS, TS, Acidity, chloride, and sulphate (mg/L), the average pH was high in Iyikwe stream with value of 6.19 although it met the WHO limit of 6.5 – 8.5. The average dissolve oxygen was high in Nneche spring With a value of 6.54 followed by Iyikwe stream with a value of 6.24(ppm). Furthermore, it revealed that the quality of surface water in Agbani has been affected by indiscriminate dumping of waste. The stream water was found to be unsuitable for human consumption when compare with World Health Organization (WHO 1998) water quality standard for drinking and domestic use. Re-Orientation of the people, sorting of waste before disposal, reduced use of contaminates by the people and treatment of contaminated surface water before usage are recommend
