KNWOLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF UNIVERSAL PRECAUTION AMONG NURSES IN UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA TEACHING HOSPITAL ITUKU-OZALLA ENUGU

Abstract

The study on knowledge and practice of universal precaution among nurses in University of Nigeria teaching hospital Ituku-Ozalla Enugu was conducted to determine the level of knowledge and practice of universal precaution among nurses in University of Nigeria teaching hospital Ituku-Ozalla Enugu. The total population used was 400 nurses from all cadre. Data were collected using questionnaire. Findings from the study revealed that majority of nurses have knowledge about universal precaution 380 (95%) and their major source of information is the hospital 230 (60%). They also know the consequences and effects of universal precautions and all the respondents think that universal precaution should be practiced. The findings also revealed that majority of the nurses practice universal precautions and that the major factor that affects its practice is availability of things needed to practice it (e.g. water, soap, gloves e. t. c.) 323 (80.75%).

It was concluded that majority of the nurses have knowledge of universal precautions and majority of them are willing to practice it but that the major factor that affects its practice is availability of things needed to practice it (e.g. water, soap, gloves e. t. c.). it was recommended that hospital management should ensure that there is provision of universal precautionmaterials always and also there should be periodic training on the proper use of universal precautions.
