1.1 Background of the Study
The Hotel Industry like any other business opens up socio-economic opportunities for both owner and customer. It has the function of providing hospitality services to customers. These customers can be travelers, foreigners, businessmen, tourists, visitors, etc. Customers are mostly constrained in trying to get a room to pass the night, as the usual practice is to look for a hotel when you have arrived in the particular location, walk in and find out whether there is a vacant room. In case there is no vacant room, you have to move to the next closest hotel to enquire once more.
So what happens if you move around sometimes very late in the night in search of a room and all close by hotels are fully booked? Other times you may be lucky to have the contact number of the hotel to reach them to book for a room, but do the hotel attendants really ensure to keep a room for you? You would be lucky to go and get a room booked for you.
They are quick to serve those who walk in rather than those who may get access to them on phone to book a room. On other times too, if you have friends or family members in the area you want a room booked, they have to go and do the checking for you. There is no system in place that bonds the hotel and the customer that the customer has actually booked a room and for that matter he is guaranteed a room. This can make customers really stranded especially if it is getting late in the night.
It is in this light that this study looks at the activities at DesantosHotel in Awka. Desantos hotel was established in the year 2009. It is a budget hotel, meaning it is less than a one star hotel. It was established to provide accommodation and catering services for tourists, locals, and foreigners who are in Nigeria to trade, rest, eat as well as those on vacation.
It engages in tourist activities like Crocodile viewing, Fishing, Bird watching as well as Boat riding, Monkey Playing, etc. The Hotel has other services for tourists like car rentals, swimming pool, tennis court, salon, etc. Though the Desantos Hotel attracts more tourists because of its proximity to the state capital Awka, Desantos hotel also needs more online presence to serve customers who are in Nigeria.
Desantos hotel booking and reservation system is manual and beyond.Normally when the book for booking gets filled, it is kept elsewhere and sometimes disposed which is not a good practice as you cannot analyse data to see trends, and make proper planning. Management is not excited about this since they are not able to keep proper records or details. This obviously can limit their competitiveness since customers cannot book for a room from any location by themselves.
The study therefore aims at developing an online hotel reservation and booking system to enable customer’s book for whatever they need from any location they are before lodging into the hotel. The system is to allow for easy access and retrieval of information and reporting. With such a system in place, Dosantos Hotel would be more competitive in Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
There has been this problem for potential guest to reserve one or more rooms for specified period using telephone.The Desantos Hotel requires a computer software to facilitate the automation of many manual tasks performed by the hotel staff.A good software system would go a long way to quicken reservation and booking of hotel rooms.
This project is an interest in taking up a challenging work in this particular area of research to test one’s confidence, so as to provide a platform to manage online reservations and bookings and also display organized information of hotel, prices and pictures.
1.4 Aims and Objectives of the Study
This study aims at design and implementation of online reservation and booking system. The specific objectives of the work are:

1.5 Significance of the Study
This work will help in a good number of ways to ease the delay in manual system of booking. The software developed will help Desantos hotel and it’s guest to achieve efficient information management system.
1.6 Report Organization
This study titled “Design and implementation of on-line hotel reservation and booking system (A study of Desantos Hotel Awka)” is composed of multiple chapters as follows: Chapter one is the introduction. Chapter Two has the literature review. Chapter three: Researchmethology.Chapter Four: Implementation and evaluation. Chapter Five is the discussion and conclusion.
1.7 Definition of Terms
The following are some terms commonly used in this project:
Analysis: Breaking a problem into successively manageable parts for individual study.
Data: Raw facts.
Input: is the term denoting either an entrance which are inserted into a system.
Process: This is the transformation of data into a useful information.
Design: Process of developing the technical and operational specification of a candidate system for implementation.
System: A regular or orderly arrangements of components or parts in a connected and interrelated series or whole group of components necessary for some operation
System Design: Detailed concentration on the technical and other specification that will make the new system operational
System Testing: Testing the whole system by the user after major programs and subsystem has been tested

MYSQL-is a relational database management system (RDBMS) that runs as a server providing multi-user access to a number of databases.
Password: Identity authenticators key that allow access to a program.
Database: A systematically arranged collection of data,designed so that data can be automatically retrivedor manipulated easily by authorzed user.
PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor (the name is a recursive acronym) this is a programming language known as a server-side scripting language.
Software: A software is a collection of written programs which directs the computer on what to do.
